This month I feel I should address the demonstrations in our cities, Seattle and Portland. Many years ago, I got caught-up in a demonstration when I was on the campus of the University of Washington, it was during the time of the Vietnam, war. The SDS (Students for Democratic Society) had organized a demonstration, against the war, a student strike. They gathered up abought forty or fifty students to march through the classrooms chanting and encouraging the students to join in the strike and march out of class, some did and some didn’t. The campus security did nothing to discourage the activity. Later when it was getting dark the crowd got much larger, the police showed up in “tack gear” and I left.
The experience I felt when I was part of the crowed was a feeling of power and you could do anything, you simply got caught up in it. It’s easy to see how it could get out of hand. I’m not one who takes to stealing or vandalism, but I can see how easy it could get started if not checked right away.
When I heard that during one of our latest demonstrations someone felt it was a good idea to burn Bibles, I was sad for them, for I feel that real Peace can only be found through Christ, we like our bibles for its wisdom not its power.
Many people feel that Christ and the Bible are dictatorial and controlling and they could not be free. All through the New Testament Paul explains That Christ was sent to free us from the old laws. They were for the Israelites, not us, in Romans 2-14 it’s clear “When the Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.” We are Gentiles, the old testament laws, many which are good, do not apply to us. Some churches include some of the old laws in their doctrine and that’s “OK.” You don’t have to join a church if you don’t want to, our salvation is through Christ Jesus, not a church. "If because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.” Rom. 5-17. Free gift means that you don’t have to do anything. Christ did it all for you."
